Amazon Learning was an online education initiative that was intended at high school students in India. On Thursday, Amazon.com Inc. announced that it would be discontinuing the service.
The Amazon Academy website offered preparation for competitive examinations such as the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), which is required for admission to the most prestigious engineering schools in India. The website was launched at the beginning of the previous year in the midst of a surge in virtual learning caused by the COVID-19 epidemic.
After completing an assessment, the online retailing giant Amazon said in a statement that it will be winding down its Amazon Academy training program “gradually to take care of existing clients.” After being shut down because of the COVID-19 virus, schools and coaching centers throughout India have reopened, and this reopening occurs at a time when many education technology businesses are experiencing hardship as a result of the closures.
Byju’s, the leader in the industry, recently made the announcement that it will be laying off 2,500 employees in an effort to become profitable. Earlier on in this year, it was reported by the indian media that other players, such as Unacademy, WhiteHat Jr. had also indicated that they would be laying off employees.
The company has not disclosed the reason why it is closing down Academy; nevertheless, ET Prime, which was the first to publish the story, stated that the move was made as part of the company’s continuous efforts to reduce expenses.
According to estimates in the media, Amazon plans to eliminate around 10,000 employees and has already begun removing responsibilities in several sectors, including devices and services, as of the beginning of this month. Additionally, Amazon disbanded the teams that were responsible for producing AWS tutorials and other online courses.
